2023 Heartland Design Excellence Awards Registration
QUALIFYING INFORMATION:
- All ASID Missouri West/Kansas Chapter Members – Professional, Allied, Industry Partner and Student Members in good standing are eligible to participate in the ASID Heartland Design Awards.
- If an interior designer is employed by a firm, he/she must be the primary interior designer on record with the project.
- No projects that have been previously awarded or entered in previous ASID competitions may be submitted. Projects may be entered in only one category.
ENTRY FEES:
- Payable via Square at time of registration. Absolutely no refunds will be granted after submission(s) are received.
- Practitioner members: $85 first entry/ $60 additional entries
- Students: $45 first entry/ $25 additional entries

PHOTOGRAPHY:
- Each entry may include up to seven photographs and up to two optional hand-drawn or computer generated floor plans.
- Professional photography is strongly recommended for submission.
- All photographic images should be a minimum of 300 ppi, max 10 mg and in JPG format.
- Photoshop may be used for color correction and light editing but NO new objects may be added to the photos.
- It is the responsibility of entrants to have no-cost reuse rights from the property owner and photographer. Photography and property owner release forms must be completed and maintained by the entrant. If chosen as a finalist, the designer must submit forms to ASID Chapter as requested.
- Students: In lieu of photographs, student entries shall include conceptual drawings and supporting product and materials photos with regard to this requirement only.
ASID MO West Kansas retains the legal right to publish all submissions and the photography will be added to the chapter's permanent photo bank to be used at the chapter's discretion, for the sole purpose of promoting the chapter. Projects cannot be accepted if they have been entered into other design competitions or professional publications. Social media posts are acceptable.
DESIGN CONCEPT STATEMENT:
In addition to photography and floor plan(s), a concept statement of 5000 characters or less must be submitted on the appropriate form. Please detail the goals of the client, any challenges and how you achieved the design solution. The statement should be written in full sentences and paragraph form. At the beginning of your design concept, please provide a short introduction/summary to be read at the awards dinner. This is an opportunity to help the judges understand specific issues or client requests that you needed to work your design around and the reasoning behind a unique design piece or direction.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
The competition will be judged anonymously by another ASID chapter. NO IDENTIFICATION OF ANY KIND is allowed on any part of the entry, except the entry form and will result in immediate disqualification. Winners will be selected based on criteria listed below. The Jurors will use a point system guideline as follows:
All Categories – 100 points possible
- Design Intent (20 points total)
- Effective Explanation of Design Criteria and Goals - 5 pts
- Effective Explanation of Challenges - 5 pts
- Quality and Clarity of Presentation - 5 pts
- Easy to understand, complete and concise with proper grammar and spelling
- Quality and Clarity of Photographs - 5 pts
- Design Execution (50 points total)
- Overall Design meets stated goals/challenges - 10 pts
- Design fulfills the project requirements and enhances the human experience
- Exhibits outstanding or unusal use of materials, detail, products, layout, etc.
- Solutions appropriate to the stated design statement - 10 pts
- Craftsmanship
- Innovative approach to design criteria
- Creative use of space - 5 pts
- Functional use of space - 10 pts
- ADA or universal design principles
- Space plan functional and reflects concept statement
- Principles and Elements of Design - 10 pts
- Cohesiveness of design elements and principles (proportion, pattern rhythm, balance)
- Elements of design successfully used in the design solution (color, texture, line, form or value fitting)
- Effective use of Lighting - 5 pts
- Use of Materials and Color (30 points total)
- Color scheme and composition - 5 pts
- Functional use of materials - 5 pts
- Creative use of materials - 5 pts
- Appropriate and/or innovative for the space - 5 pts
- Appropriately sustainable or environmentally friendly - 5 pts
- Furniture, fixtures and equipment selections used appropriately for the space - 5 pts
Judging Point Scale 1-5:
- Sub-standard, imperfect, noticeable problems
- Competent, minimal problems, superior product/execution, good design, polished, acceptable
- Skilled, insignificant problems, superior product/execution, good design
- Exemplary, near perfect, top quality products/execution, superb design, inspired
- Immaculate, perfect, uncompromising design/execution, brilliant, extraordinary
Awards Presentation
Winning projects will be announced at the ASID MO West/KS Chapter Heartland Design Awards annual event in February 2024. All participants in the design competition are encouraged to attend and celebrate with their design teams, family, friends, clients, trade partners and contractors.
Awards:
- Judging will be strictly based on the criteria provided above and Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards will only be given to qualifying projects.
- Gold is from 85-100
- Silver is from 69-84
- Bronze is from 54-68
- Best of Show - Residential Heartland Design Award - based on judges' highest awarded points. In case of a tie, the ASID MO West/KS Chapter President presents those tied projects to the Chapter Board of Directors for a vote. If a board member has submitted one of the projects being voted on, they must recuse themselves from the vote.

- It's an Opportunity to be recognized publicly and to give recognition to your favorite IPs (Industry Parnters), Contractors, and Trades

- Awards Presentation, Thursday Feb. 15th, time TBD. Tickets for the Heartland Design Awards Presentation will be purchased separately.

1. What projects can be submitted?
Any projects not previously submitted or given an award by ASID.
2. What is the cost for an entry in Design Awards?

3. What Information can I have on the Entry?
Submitted entries are anonymous to the judges. Therefore; NO IDENTIFICATION OF ANY KIND is allowed on any photo or in any description (i.e. designer, company, client, project name/logo, etc.).
4. What are the Photo Size and File Requirements?
You may submit up to 7 photos which cannot be larger than 10 MB, 300 ppi, and must be a JPG or PDF.
5. Do I need to submit a floor plan?
Floor plans (1-2) of the area being entered may be submitted if appropriate to convey the design solution. Floor plans may be hand-drafted or computer-generated.
6. What is the Character Limit for Photo or Floor Plan Descriptions?
Descriptions on the photos or floor plans should not exceed 150 Characters.
7. Do I need a release form from the property owner and photographer?
Yes, the entrant will maintain the release form and vouch for the approval of the property owner and the photographer.
8. How can my entry be disqualified?
By not returning all requested information OR by not meeting one of more deadlines.
By including prohibited designer or client identification on any submitted photographs or floorplans, or including any of the same prohibited information with any entry form
9. How do I submit my entry?
- Log into or create a CPJ account if you have not yet done so.
- After logging into your CPJ account and selecting your entries, click Register For This Event to transmit payment through Square.
- After payment is completed, return to this landing page to see your entries
- Click on each entry to begin your work - upload your photos (maximum 7), floor plans (maximum 2), and fill out each required form. Once finished, your entry will show complete and you are done.
All submissions must be completed no later than 11:59 p.m. on December 4, 2023.
10. Are any of the fees refundable?
No, entry fees, tickets, etc are non-refundable.
